Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant Calls for Stringent Policy to Protect Marathi Language Rights

Maharashtra cabinet minister Uday Samant has called for a strict policy to protect the Marathi language. He emphasised that preventing residents from speaking Marathi will lead to severe consequences. This statement follows an incident in Dombivli, Thane, where non-Marathi residents allegedly opposed a Marathi socio-religious event. Samant stressed the importance of respecting cultural traditions and languages within Maharashtra.

Uday Samant Advocates for Marathi Language Protection

Samant highlighted the need for a policy to prevent such incidents from recurring. He stated, "Marathi is our mother tongue, and any attempt to prevent us from speaking it must be met with stringent action. Such intimidation will not be tolerated." He pointed out that respect for language should be mutual when interacting with people from other states.

Marathi Language in Public Spaces

The minister also addressed concerns about the use of Marathi in public spaces like multiplexes and theatres. He plans to instruct these establishments to ensure that the Marathi language is treated fairly. This move aims to prevent any form of injustice against Marathi speakers in various public domains.

In addition, Samant discussed a recent issue involving the absence of Marathi commentary on Hotstar during cricket matches. He noted that commentary is available in all other languages except Marathi. "I have spoken to authorities there about it," he said, indicating his commitment to resolving this matter.

Upcoming World Marathi Conference

Samant was speaking at a press conference about the Vishwa Marathi Sammelan or World Marathi Conference. This event is scheduled from January 31 to February 2 at Pune's Fergusson College. The conference aims to celebrate and promote the Marathi language and culture on a global stage.

The minister's remarks underscore the importance of preserving linguistic heritage in Maharashtra. By advocating for policies that protect Marathi speakers, Samant seeks to ensure that cultural practices like haldi kunku are respected and upheld within the state.
