Maharashtra, Jharkhand Election Dates: Maha To Vote On Nov 20, Jharkhand Polling On Nov 13, 20
The Election Commission has set the wheels in motion for the upcoming Assembly Elections 2024 in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, marking significant political dates in the Indian electoral calendar. Maharashtra is slated for election activities on November 20, while Jharkhand will witness a two-pronged electoral process on November 13 and November 20. The culmination of this electoral fervor will be on November 23, when the vote counting for both states takes place. This announcement was made by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who also noted the extensive preparations to accommodate the vast number of eligible voters in both states, with Maharashtra setting up 1,86,000 polling stations and Jharkhand preparing over 29,000.
With approximately 9.6 crore eligible voters in Maharashtra and 2.6 crore in Jharkhand, the elections are a monumental logistic and democratic exercise. Maharashtra's demographic includes 4.96 crore male voters, 4.66 crore female voters, and a significant young voter population of 1.85 crore, including around 21 lakh first-time voters. To ensure inclusive participation, Maharashtra offers home voting for senior citizens over 85 years and persons with disabilities (PwDs) through Form 12D. This initiative is complemented by accessibility measures such as ramps, wheelchairs, and transportation assistance to facilitate the voting process for all eligible citizens.

Reflecting on the outcomes of the 2019 elections, the political landscape in both states has seen significant shifts. Maharashtra's 288-seat Assembly was predominantly won by the BJP with 105 seats, yet it was the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition that eventually took the helm of governance. In contrast, Jharkhand's 81-seat assembly witnessed a nail-biting contest with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerging as the frontrunner with 30 seats, closely trailed by the BJP with 25 seats.
In light of the elections, political parties have been quick to strategize and mobilize their resources. The Congress and other parties have already designated Senior Observers and State Election Coordinators to oversee the electoral battle. Meanwhile, discussions on candidate nominations and electoral strategies are heating up within the BJP camp, with significant meetings planned to refine their approach for Jharkhand.
The political atmosphere is buzzing with activities and declarations as the election date approaches. Just before the schedule was announced, Jharkhand's Chief Minister Hemant Soren made headlines by urging the release of Rs 1.36 lakh crore in dues from coal companies. Furthermore, there have been vocal criticisms and allegations aimed at the Maharashtra government and the Election Commission, accusing them of electoral manipulation. Amidst these preparations, concerns over EVM tampering have been dismissed by the Election Commission, reassuring the public about the security and integrity of the electronic voting system.
The anticipation surrounding the Assembly Elections 2024 in Maharashtra and Jharkhand is building, as political entities and the electorate alike gear up for a period of intense political engagement and decision-making. With the stage set for electoral battles in both states, the focus now shifts to how political parties will navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, aiming to align themselves with the electorate's expectations and aspirations.
