Supriya Sule Questions Maharashtra Government's Account of Badlapur Case Accused's Death in Police Custody

NCP MP Supriya Sule raised concerns about the Maharashtra government's account of events surrounding the death of Akshay Shinde, an accused in a sexual assault case. Sule questioned how Shinde, whose face was covered and hands were cuffed, managed to seize a policeman's gun in a moving vehicle. This incident has sparked significant debate and scrutiny.

Concerns Raised Over Badlapur Case Accuseds Death

According to police reports, Akshay Shinde died on Monday after being shot by an officer. The shooting occurred when Shinde allegedly grabbed a policeman's gun and fired, injuring an assistant inspector. This incident took place while Shinde was being transported from Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai to Badlapur in Thane district.

Police Self-Defence Claim

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the police acted in self-defence. They emphasised that the officer's actions were necessary under the circumstances. However, Sule expressed doubts about this explanation and called for more transparency regarding the incident.

Sule demanded that any CCTV footage of the event be released to the public. She argued that such evidence could clarify how Shinde accessed the weapon while in custody. Sule also highlighted concerns about police safety in Maharashtra, noting that even officers are at risk.

Public Reaction and Demands

Sule had previously advocated for a public hanging of the accused following a trial to send a strong societal message. Her comments reflect widespread public outrage over the case and its handling by authorities. The incident has intensified discussions on law enforcement practices and accountability.

The injury sustained by a policeman during the incident adds another layer of concern. Sule described this as troubling, questioning the safety measures in place for both detainees and officers. The situation has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the procedures followed during prisoner transport.

The unfolding events have drawn attention to potential gaps in security protocols within Maharashtra's police force. As investigations continue, there is growing pressure on authorities to provide clear answers and ensure justice is served appropriately.
