Maharashtra Govt Initiates High-Level Probe into Ghatkopar Hoarding Tragedy

The Maharashtra government has established a six-member committee to investigate the collapse of an illegal hoarding in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, which resulted in 17 fatalities. This committee is led by Dilip Bhosle, former Chief Justice of the High Court, and includes high-ranking officials such as the Director General of Police and the Additional Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Probe into Ghatkopar Tragedy

The tragic incident occurred on May 13 when a large iron hoarding fell onto a petrol pump during a dust storm, killing 17 people and injuring 74 others. The state Home department's order outlines the committee's responsibilities, which include scrutinising the roles of those responsible for the hoarding and petrol pump.

Investigating Roles and Responsibilities

The committee will delve into the records and financial dealings of the entities involved, looking for any possible collusion with officials from various agencies. This investigation aims to uncover any negligence or misconduct that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Another critical task for the committee is to assess the current procedures for approving and installing hoardings on government and railway properties. They will recommend improvements to these processes to prevent similar incidents in the future. The panel will also review policies related to hoardings on railway or police land.

Evaluating Safety Protocols

Key areas of focus include evaluating the adequacy of approval processes for hoardings and petrol pumps on government and railway lands. The committee will also assess safety protocols and the legality of such installations. This comprehensive review aims to identify gaps in current practices that could pose risks.

Additionally, the committee will analyse how land is allotted for petrol pumps and hoardings. This analysis will help determine if there are any flaws in the process that need addressing to enhance safety and prevent illegal operations.

The panel's recommendations will be crucial in shaping future policies to ensure such tragedies do not recur. By examining every aspect of this incident, from approval processes to safety protocols, the committee aims to create a safer environment for all.

The committee's findings and recommendations are expected to lead to significant policy changes. These changes will aim to improve safety standards and prevent illegal activities related to hoardings and petrol pumps on government and railway properties.

This high-level inquiry underscores the government's commitment to addressing safety concerns and holding accountable those responsible for such incidents. The outcome of this investigation will likely influence future regulations and enforcement practices.

Ensuring public safety is paramount, and this inquiry is a step towards achieving that goal. The committee's work will provide valuable insights into preventing similar tragedies in the future.
