Maharashtra Finance Department Cracks Down on Unnecessary Spending
The Maharashtra finance department has imposed a temporary ban on the procurement of non-essential items and certain activities to curb excessive spending during the last quarter of the financial year.
In a bid to control excessive spending, the Maharashtra finance department has issued a directive to halt the procurement of non-essential items, including spare parts for computers and photocopy machines, until March 31, 2023. This decision comes after observing a significant surge in expenditures during the last three months of the financial year.

Restrictions on Repair Works and Workshops
The circular issued by the finance department also prohibits repair works of existing furniture and the organization of routine workshops and seminars by various state departments. However, there are certain exceptions to this order. The procurement of medicines by government hospitals and ongoing schemes funded by both the central and state governments are exempted from this ban.
Exemptions for Certain Projects
Additionally, projects that receive funding from non-governmental agencies or foreign sources are also exempted from the procurement restrictions. The government has taken note of the substantial spending that occurs during the last quarter of the financial year and aims to curb unnecessary expenditures.
Effective Period and Additional Guidelines
The order will remain in effect until March 31, 2023. While the procurement of daily consumables will not be affected, all departments are advised to refrain from making additional purchases that may be carried forward to the next financial year.
The Maharashtra government's decision to put a hold on non-essential procurement demonstrates its commitment to fiscal prudence and responsible spending. By implementing these measures, the state aims to optimize resource allocation and ensure efficient utilization of public funds.
