Maharashtra Doctor Suicide Case: Cop Gopal Badane Arrested for Sexual Assault

Two suspects, including a police sub-inspector, have been arrested in connection with the death by suicide of a 29-year-old woman doctor from Satara, officials confirmed on Saturday. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Maharashtra, following revelations from the doctor's handwritten suicide note.

Suicide Note Names Two Men for Harassment and Assault

The young doctor, posted at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital, was found dead in her hotel room on Thursday. A message inscribed on her hand accused software engineer Prashant Bankar of mental harassment and police sub-inspector Gopal Badane of sexual assault.

Bankar, who is the son of the doctor's landlord, was arrested from a farmhouse near Pune late Friday night. Meanwhile, Badane surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station and was taken into custody. "The concerned police officers have already been suspended," confirmed Satara SP Tushar Doshi.

Personal Relationship and Harassment Allegations

According to investigators, the doctor and Bankar had been in a relationship that had recently deteriorated. A senior police official stated, "Their chats and call records show she was very possessive, and after Bankar started distancing himself, they argued frequently."

Bankar's sister, who requested anonymity, said the two had reconnected last month when Bankar was ill with dengue and the doctor treated him. "A day before her suicide, she made frequent calls to Bankar. We have handed over screenshots of the calls and messages to the police," she said.

Following the fallout between the two, Bankar's father allegedly sought the help of PSI Badane to mediate the situation.

Political Pressure and Allegations of Misconduct

The case took a political turn after it was revealed that the deceased had earlier accused certain police officials and an MP's aides of pressuring her to manipulate medical reports. She had complained to the administration about being coerced to alter post-mortem details to help police secure custody of suspects in various cases.

Although the doctor did not explicitly name the MP in her submission, opposition leaders have accused former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar of involvement. Naik has denied the claims, calling them "baseless allegations."

Chief Minister's Response and Ongoing Investigation

Reacting to the controversy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the incident "deeply tragic." Addressing reporters in Mumbai, he said, "Whoever is responsible will face the strictest punishment. I urge the opposition not to politicise this sensitive matter."

The investigation continues as police examine call data, messages, and testimonies related to the doctor's final days. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of harassment or misconduct.
