Maharashtra Assembly Elections: List Of Approved Voter Identity Documents
Voters in Maharashtra can now use one of 12 approved identity documents, aside from the Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC), to vote in the assembly elections on November 20. This decision by the Election Commission of India (ECI) mirrors a similar move during the Lok Sabha elections in April.
For those with a Photographic Voter ID Card, it remains the primary identification at polling stations. However, voters without this card have alternatives. The ECI has provided a list of 12 acceptable IDs to ensure everyone can participate in the election process.

Alternative Identity Proofs for Voting
The list of acceptable IDs includes Aadhaar cards and Employment Identity Cards issued under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Other options are passbooks with photos from banks or postal departments, Health Bima Smart Cards from the Ministry of Labour, and driving licences.
Additionally, voters can use PAN cards, National Smart Cards from the Population Register, passports, pension documents, and ID cards issued by central or state governments. Public sector undertaking cards are also valid forms of identification for voting purposes.
Special Provisions for Certain Groups
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment issues special identity cards for persons with disabilities. These are accepted as valid proof. Official identity cards given to members of Parliament, Legislative Assembly, and Council are also part of the approved list.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) must present their original passport when voting. If there is a change in address, voters can still use their previous ID card if their name appears on the electoral roll with the updated address.
Ensuring Smooth Voting Experience
To prevent any inconvenience on election day, registered voters will receive information slips detailing polling station locations and other essential details at least five days before voting. Voters should bring both this slip and a photo ID to the polling station.
This initiative aims to streamline the voting process and ensure that all eligible voters can exercise their right to vote without facing unnecessary hurdles. By providing multiple identification options, the ECI hopes to facilitate greater voter participation across Maharashtra.
