Maharashtra to Establish International Standard Central Park in Mumbai

The Maharashtra cabinet has approved the creation of a 120-acre central public park at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai. This decision was made during a weekly cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The park will be developed to international standards, and no construction will be allowed on the site.

Land Allocation and Lease Agreement

Out of the total 211 acres of the Race Course land, 91 acres will be leased to Ms Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) for 30 years, starting from June 1, 2023, to May 30, 2053. This lease may be extended further as per the cabinet's decision. RWITC is known for hosting horse races at this track.

The remaining 120 acres will be handed over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for developing the central park. The park aims to meet international standards and provide a green space for public use.

Opposition's Criticism

Former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray criticised the BJP-Shiv Sena government for allegedly trying to take over open spaces like the Race Course and Wellington Club for their preferred builders and contractors. "We will restore its natural state when we form a government in the state, and legally punish those who colluded to give away the Race Course for their personal gains," said Thackeray.

Thackeray also emphasised that there should be no theme park at the site, no construction above or below ground, and no damage to heritage structures. His comments reflect concerns about preserving the natural and historical integrity of the area.

The decision to develop a central park at Mahalaxmi Race Course is seen as a significant move towards enhancing green spaces in Mumbai. The project aims to provide residents with a recreational area while maintaining environmental standards.

The cabinet's decision ensures that while part of the land will continue to serve its traditional purpose under RWITC, a substantial portion will be transformed into a public park. This balanced approach aims to cater to both heritage preservation and urban development needs.

The new central park is expected to become a major attraction in Mumbai, offering residents and visitors a place to relax and enjoy nature. The project aligns with global standards for urban parks, aiming to enhance the city's green infrastructure.

The initiative reflects a broader trend towards creating more public green spaces in urban areas. Such projects are essential for improving air quality, providing recreational opportunities, and enhancing overall quality of life in densely populated cities like Mumbai.

The conclusion of this project will mark a significant milestone in Mumbai's urban development. It demonstrates a commitment to balancing development with environmental preservation, ensuring that future generations can enjoy both modern amenities and natural beauty.
