At least four devotees from Belagavi tragically lost their lives in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, as confirmed by Karnataka police. The incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday when millions gathered for the Mauni Amavasya holy dip. This day also marks the Second Shahi Snan, attracting vast crowds to the sacred confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
Special Team Formed for Recovery
Belagavi District Commissioner, Mohammad Roshan, verified the fatalities and communicated this to the media via phone. A dedicated team, led by a senior district officer and a police officer, has been established to travel to Prayagraj. Their mission is to bring back the bodies of those who perished in this unfortunate event.

In response to this tragic occurrence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. They assured him of full support from the central government. Meanwhile, heavy security measures have been implemented at Triveni Sangam to ensure safety during ongoing rituals.
The Uttar Pradesh government reported that by 10 AM on Wednesday, approximately 36.1 million devotees had participated in the holy dip at Triveni Sangam. Other significant bathing dates during this Maha Kumbh include February 3 for Basant Panchami, February 12 for Maghi Purnima, and February 26 for Maha Shivaratri.
A stampede-like situation arose amidst these massive gatherings, leading to several casualties.
