Mahakumbh Mela Seen From Space: ISRO’s Satellite Beams Spectacular Images
A radar imaging satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has captured detailed images of the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The images, captured by the advanced RISAT-1A satellite equipped with optical sensors and radar technology capable of day-and-night imaging, highlight the vast infrastructure built for the event. Managed by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) in Hyderabad, these images reveal the layout of roads, structures, and numerous pontoon bridges across the river network.

According to Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director of NRSC, the radar satellite was instrumental in capturing these images despite the cloud cover over Prayagraj.
The Uttar Pradesh administration is reportedly utilizing these images to manage disaster mitigation efforts and prevent stampedes during the massive religious gathering.
The satellite images were captured at key intervals: prior to the Mahakumbh's commencement on April 6, 2024, during the major development phase on December 22, 2024, and as the crowds began gathering on January 10, 2025.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, emphasized the significance of this technological intervention, stating, "These advanced technologies represent a paradigm shift in managing large-scale religious gatherings. The Mahakumbh Mela exemplifies how technology and tradition can combine to ensure a cleaner, healthier future for all."

Mahakumbh 2025, a spiritual event held every 12 years, has drawn over 450 million devotees from across the globe. The mega event, which runs until February 26, has seen an immense turnout.
On Makar Sankranti alone, approximately 1.6 crore devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam by noon, marking a grand start to the Mahakumbh 2025 celebrations. Over the next two months, crores of devotees are expected to descend upon Prayagraj to cleanse their sins through this sacred ritual.
