Mahakumbh 2025: Pollution Control Board Tags Some Ghats 'Not Fit For Bathing'

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Tuesday expressed concerns over the quality of water in Prayagraj during the Mahakumbh. Their report, presented to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), revealed that faecal coliform levels exceeded permissible limits at various locations. This contamination is a sign of sewage presence, with the acceptable limit set at 2,500 units per 100 ml.

The NGT bench, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and Expert Member A Senthil Vel, discussed measures to prevent sewage from entering the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj. The CPCB's report dated February 3 indicated multiple instances of non-compliance with primary bathing water quality standards due to high faecal coliform levels.

Water Quality Concerns During Mahakumbh

During the Mahakumbh Mela, many people bathe in the river at Prayagraj, especially on auspicious days. This activity contributes to increased faecal coliform concentrations. The tribunal noted that despite previous directives, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) had not submitted a comprehensive action report addressing these issues.

The UPPCB had only provided a covering letter with some water test results. Upon reviewing these documents, it was evident that high levels of faecal and total coliform were present at several sites. This finding underscores the need for immediate action to address water pollution concerns in the region.

Tribunal's Directive for Further Action

The tribunal granted one day for Uttar Pradesh's counsel to review the CPCB report and submit a response. Additionally, they instructed the Member Secretary of UPPCB and relevant state authorities to attend a virtual hearing on February 19. These officials are responsible for maintaining Ganga's water quality in Prayagraj.
