Mahakumbh 2025: Free Train Ticket For Pilgrims On The Cards? Check Out What It Is

With the Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025 expected to draw an astounding 40-45 crore devotees, the Indian Railways is gearing up with special arrangements to manage the massive influx. Among the key initiatives under consideration is the provision of free train travel for passengers in general coaches returning from the Kumbh Mela.

The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated a budget of Rs 5,000 crore for the 45-day long event, which runs from January 13 to February 26, 2025. To handle the daily movement of nearly 5 lakh passengers in general coaches, the Railways plans to operate 3,000 special trains during the Mahakumbh.

According to reports, the Railways may waive ticket requirements for general coach passengers traveling short distances (200-250 km) from Prayagraj after attending the Kumbh. Passengers needing to travel further might be allowed to buy tickets directly from the TTE onboard without penalties if they couldn't secure tickets beforehand due to overcrowding.

The proposal aligns with discussions between the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government and Indian Railways to streamline pilgrim movement. If implemented, this initiative could alleviate logistical challenges while enhancing the experience for millions of devotees returning from the Mahakumbh.

While the process is reportedly in its final stages, no formal announcement has been made yet. Devotees and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting confirmation, as the move is expected to simplify travel for millions of participants during one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
