Mahakumbh 2025: First-Ever Underwater Drone Surveillance For Pilgrim Safety
The Uttar Pradesh government is making extensive security arrangements for the upcoming Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela, set to take place from January 13 to February 26. With more than 45 crore pilgrims expected to attend, authorities have introduced unprecedented measures to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the event.
For the first time, underwater drones will be used in the Sangam area, where the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet, according to a Lokmat report. These drones will operate at depths of up to 100 meters, providing continuous surveillance both underwater and in the air. The drones are designed to work effectively in low light and will monitor the waters 24/7. Tethered drones will also be deployed to secure the airspace above the event.
In addition to the underwater drones, an anti-drone system will be in place, which was successfully used during the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya earlier this year. These advanced drones will help detect any suspicious activity, allowing authorities to respond swiftly.
Prayagraj's police force, including personnel from the Provincial Armed Police (PAC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), will be stationed along the banks of the river. Over 700 boats will assist in monitoring the waters, and numerous remote-controlled lifebuoys will be available to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.
Moreover, AI-enabled cameras will be employed to track crowd movements, instantly estimating attendance numbers. Facial recognition technology will further bolster security, making this Mahakumbh Mela one of the most high-tech and secure events of its kind. Authorities hope these measures will set a global benchmark for large-scale event safety.
