Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: Who Are Naga Sadhus?
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world, will take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Held every twelve years, this monumental event is anticipated to attract an estimated 45 crore visitors from across India and the globe.
Overview Maha Kumbh Mela
The Maha Kumbh Mela is the pinnacle of religious congregations in India, featuring:

- A sprawling tent city with cottages, huts, and platforms.
- Comprehensive civic, administrative, and security arrangements by the government and local authorities.
- A remarkable assembly of ascetics, including Naga Sadhus and mahants, emerging from seclusion in forests, mountains, and caves.
- At the heart of the event is the Kumbhayog, or the astrologically determined auspicious times for ritual bathing. The first to partake in these baths are the Naga Sadhus, who march to the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers with the vigor of an army, their bodies ash-covered and adorned with dreadlocks.
The Legend Behind the Kumbh Mela
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu spilled four drops of nectar (amrit) during a celestial scuffle. These drops fell at four sacred sites: Prayag (Prayagraj), Haridwar, Nasik, and Ujjain. These locations became revered as Tirthas, where devotees can attain salvation. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years at Prayagraj's Sangam, is considered the holiest of all such gatherings.
Who Are Naga Sadhus?
The term Naga originates from Sanskrit, meaning mountain. Historically, Naga Sadhus trace their roots to ancient traditions depicted on Mohenjo-Daro seals, showcasing their devotion to Lord Shiva in the form of Pashupatinath.
Beliefs and Practices:
Naga Sadhus worship Lord Shiva by embodying his essence, adhering to an austere lifestyle detached from worldly ties.
Appearance:
Despite their fierce looks, they are known for their gentle demeanour. Female sadhus, though rare, are referred to as sadvins.
