Maha Shivratri 2025: Rituals

On the day before the main festival, known as Trayodashi, devotees typically eat only once. On Shivratri day, they begin by bathing and wearing clean clothes. After completing their morning rituals, they take Sankalp, a vow to observe a full-day fast, and will eat again the following day, as per the CNBC TV 18 report.

During the day, devotees focus on self-discipline and seek blessings from Lord Shiva. A key ritual involves conducting the Shivlinga snan with water, milk, saffron, honey, and Ganga water. Worship follows with offerings of diya, incense, bel patra, dhatura fruit, raw rice, milk, curd, sandalwood, and ghee.

Devotees often take a second bath in the evening before performing puja or visiting temples. The Shiva Puja is done at night, and devotees break their fast the next day after bathing. A light sattvik meal is typically enjoyed to conclude the fast, which includes non-cereal foods, fruits, and sweets known as prasad.

During Maha Shivratri, devotees follow strict fasting rules, avoiding grains and legumes, offering coconut water and flowers like kevada and champa, and applying kumkum tilak.

What Is Next?
