Maha Kumbh 2025 Begins In Prayagraj With Record Crowds, Grand Security, Spiritual Celebrations
A massive crowd of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam - the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers - in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday morning to take a dip in the 'holy waters,' marking the beginning of Maha Kumbh 2025. Over 40 lakh pilgrims, many travelling from across India and abroad, participated in the sacred ritual of "Shahi Snan".
The 45-day Maha Kumbh festival, running from 13th January to 26th February, is expected to attract around 45 crore people and will showcase India's rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions. The event is held once every 12 years.

Grand Security Arrangements for Maha Kumbh
The Uttar Pradesh police have implemented extensive security measures across the city to ensure the safety of the public during the Maha Kumbh.
For the first time, underwater drones capable of diving up to 100 metres have been deployed to provide round-the-clock surveillance at the Sangam area, as announced by the Culture Ministry. Tethered drones, reaching heights of up to 120 metres, have also been positioned to offer aerial views to identify crowd surges or areas requiring medical or security intervention.
A total of 2,700 cameras, equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time monitoring and facial recognition technology, will be installed at entry points.
Additionally, a team of 56 cyber warriors will be monitoring online threats, and cyber help desks have been set up at all local police stations.
Authorities have arranged 150,000 tents to accommodate the pilgrims, with additional toilets and sanitation facilities. Over 450,000 new electricity connections have been installed, with the Kumbh expected to consume more power than 100,000 urban apartments in a month.
Electric buses and modern facilities have also been put in place for devotees. The Indian Railways is running 98 special trains, which will make 3,300 trips during the festival. Furthermore, the renovation of 92 roads, the construction of 30 bridges, and the installation of 800 multilingual signs have been completed in the city.
For healthcare, temporary hospitals with surgical and diagnostic facilities have been set up.
Kumbh Sah'AI'yak Chatbot
The Kumbh Sah'AI'yak chatbot, a cutting-edge AI tool, has been introduced to provide real-time guidance and updates to the devotees attending the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.
Acting as a digital companion, it offers features such as multilingual support, interactive engagement, personal navigation, and cultural insights. The chatbot can be accessed via the official Maha Kumbh 2025 mobile app or WhatsApp.
Key Dates, Events, and Attendees at Maha Kumbh Mela 2025
Over the six weeks of the festival, devotees will engage in elaborate rituals, prayers, religious processions with elephants, horse-back parades, and chariot rides.
Some important dates include 13th January, when Maha Kumbh commences with the full Moon, 29th January - the 'Mauni Amavasya', when celestial alignments are said to make the waters especially purifying, and 26th February - when the celebrations conclude with a final holy dip in the sacred waters.
Over 40 crore devotees, including saints and celebrities from around the globe, are expected to attend the Maha Kumbh festival. Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of Apple founder Steve Jobs, who was renamed 'Kamala' by her guru Swami Kailashanand Giri Ji Maharaj, is attending the grand event.
According to Kailashanand Giri, she plans to stay at the Kumbh and take a dip in the Ganges.
In previous years, celebrities such as actor Richard Gere, director David Lynch, and Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama have also participated.
