The life sentence awarded to five Army personnel has been suspended by the Armed Forces Tribunal. It was alleged that Sajjad Khan, Riyaz Lone and Shafi Lone of Nadihal village were lured into an Army camp and subsequently killed in a staged encounter. Following the encounter they were branded as foreign militants.

An investigation was conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir police following which it was found that the encounter was fake. Following this the Army launched court martial proceedings in December 2013. They were then sentenced to life and incidentally this was the first such case in which lifers were awarded in Kashmir.
