M T Vasudevan Nair, Celebrated Malayalam Writer and Jnanpith Award Winner, Passes Away at 91
Renowned author and Jnanpith Award recipient M T Vasudevan Nair has passed away at the age of 91. He was receiving treatment for heart failure at a private hospital, according to hospital sources. Known widely as M T, he was under the care of a team of specialists, including cardiologists and critical care experts, since his admission last week.

M T Vasudevan Nair's literary career spanned seven decades, during which he wrote nine novels, 19 short story collections, directed six films, and crafted around 54 screenplays. His novel "Naalukettu: The Ancestral House" is considered a classic in Malayalam literature. Other notable works include "Asuravithu," "Manju," and "Kaalam."
Achievements and Recognition
His contributions to literature earned him the Jnanpith Award in 1995, India's highest literary honour. He also received numerous other accolades such as the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Mathrubhumi Literary Award, and O N V Literary Award. In 2005, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
In 2013, M T received the J C Daniel Award for lifetime achievement in Malayalam cinema. More recently, in 2022, he was awarded the inaugural Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian honour from the Kerala government. He also served as the editor of Mathrubhumi Weekly for several years.
Tributes and Mourning
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences, stating that M T's passing is an irreparable loss to both Kerala and Malayalam literature globally. "The brilliance that brought Malayalam literature to the forefront of world literature is what we have lost with the passing of M T Vasudevan Nair," Vijayan remarked.
Vijayan described M T as a towering figure in short story writing, novel writing, screenplay writing, film direction, journalism, and cultural leadership. Through his works, M T conveyed the beauty and complexity of Kerala's life while reflecting its cultural traditions. "He marked not only the individual minds of Keralites but also the collective consciousness of the people of Kerala through his writings," Vijayan added.
The state government announced official mourning on December 26 and 27 to honour M T's memory. All government events scheduled for December 26 have been postponed as a mark of respect.
