M. Chinnaswamy Stampede Compensation In Karnataka Govt. Increased From ₹10 Lakh To ₹25 Lakh

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced an increase in compensation for the families of those who died in the tragic stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, raising the amount from ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh per family. The incident occurred on June 4, 2025, during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration and claimed 11 lives while injuring 56 others.

The stampede happened as an estimated 2 to 3 lakh fans gathered to celebrate the IPL victory, vastly exceeding the stadium's capacity of 35,000. The overwhelming crowd led to severe overcrowding and chaos, causing the fatal stampede.

M Chinnaswamy Stampede Compensation In Karnataka Increased From 10 Lakh To 25 Lakh By State Government

In response to the tragedy and public outcry over apparent mismanagement and lack of crowd control at the event, the Karnataka government has taken several measures. It has set up a one-man inquiry commission led by retired High Court judge John Michael Cunha to investigate the causes of the stampede. The commission is tasked with identifying lapses, omissions, and those responsible, as well as recommending steps to prevent such incidents in the future. The panel will operate under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, and has full powers to summon witnesses and examine evidence under the Civil Procedure Code, as confirmed by an official notification dated June 5.

Alongside the inquiry, the state government has ordered a magisterial probe and committed to providing free medical treatment to the injured. The tragic event and the government's response have sparked widespread public outrage, focusing on the failures in managing the large crowd during the high-profile celebration.
