Jammu & Kashmir's Lt Governor Kickstarts 15-Day Cleanliness Drive

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha initiated a 15-day Shuchita Sangram cleanliness campaign on Wednesday. At the launch event, Sinha honoured sanitation workers and praised the contributions of citizens and other stakeholders in the Swachhta Abhiyan.

Cleanliness Drive Begins in J&K

"Swachhta Pakhwada is not just a campaign but a movement which embodies the spirit of a clean and healthy India that is inspired by the vision of Pujya Bapu and aims to instil a sense of responsibility and commitment towards maintaining cleanliness in our surroundings," said the lieutenant governor.

Focus on Tourist Spots

Sinha highlighted that the campaign would prioritise the cleanliness of 186 tourist locations. These sites were identified through collaboration between the rural development, housing and urban development, and tourism departments. This initiative aims to enhance the appeal of these tourist spots while promoting hygiene.

The lieutenant governor also pointed out the importance of building capacity among panchayat secretaries and village-level workers. This effort is intended to foster behaviour change towards better sanitation practices in rural areas.

Public Awareness and Community Participation

Sinha instructed officials to raise public awareness about waste management, segregation, and its environmental impact. He emphasised the need for community involvement in these efforts to ensure long-term success.

During his speech, Sinha acknowledged Jammu Kashmir's exceptional performance in the Swachh Bharat Mission - Gramin. He noted that sustaining these efforts and maintaining the infrastructure created are now the biggest challenges to achieving the rank of cleanest Union Territory.

The campaign's launch underscored the collective effort required from all stakeholders to maintain cleanliness. Sinha's directives aim to ensure that both urban and rural areas benefit from improved sanitation practices.

The Shuchita Sangram campaign is expected to bring significant improvements in hygiene standards across Jammu and Kashmir. By focusing on tourist spots and involving local communities, it aims to create a cleaner environment for residents and visitors alike.

This initiative reflects a broader vision of a clean India, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. It seeks to instil a sense of responsibility among citizens towards maintaining their surroundings.

The emphasis on capacity building for local officials highlights the importance of grassroots involvement in achieving sustainable sanitation goals. This approach ensures that changes are not only implemented but also maintained over time.

Overall, the Shuchita Sangram campaign represents a comprehensive effort to enhance cleanliness across Jammu and Kashmir. By combining public awareness, community participation, and targeted initiatives, it aims to create lasting improvements in sanitation standards.

The campaign's success will depend on continued collaboration between government departments, local officials, and citizens. With sustained efforts, Jammu and Kashmir can achieve its goal of becoming the cleanest Union Territory in India.
