Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi to Lead as India's New Army Chief from June 30
The Indian government has officially announced Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as the successor to Gen Manoj Pande as the Chief of the Army Staff, with his tenure set to begin on the afternoon of June 30. This decision comes after Gen Pande's retirement and marks a continuation of the tradition of adhering to the seniority principle in such high-profile military appointments. Lt Gen Dwivedi, who is currently the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, brings a wealth of operational experience from the frontlines along the borders with China and Pakistan.

Lt Gen Dwivedi's appointment was anticipated following an unusual extension of Gen Pande's tenure by one month, which had initially sparked speculations regarding the next Chief of Army Staff. The extension was announced just six days before Gen Pande was due to retire on May 31. With this new appointment, Lt Gen Dwivedi will take over command amidst ongoing border tensions and the need for modernisation within the army.
Having assumed the role of Vice Chief of Army Staff on February 19, Lt Gen Dwivedi has had a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades. His prior position as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command from 2022 to 2024 saw him play a crucial role in strategic guidance and operational oversight along India's northern and western borders. His efforts were particularly noted in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and in negotiations with China regarding border disputes.
Lt Gen Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, and was commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. Throughout his service, he has held various command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments. His leadership roles have included commanding the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, Brigade 26 Sector Assam Rifles, Inspector General Assam Rifles East, and 9 Corps.
In recognition of his service, Lt Gen Dwivedi has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards. His contributions have not only been limited to operational achievements but also encompassed efforts towards modernising and equipping the largest Army command as part of India's self-reliant initiative, Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The transition in leadership comes at a critical time for India's military, facing challenges along its borders and within its own ranks in terms of modernisation. Lt Gen Dwivedi's extensive experience and strategic insight are expected to guide the Indian Army through these evolving security dynamics.
