LS polls Phase 9: Bihar, UP, West Bengal have criminal candidates

New Delhi, May 8: As the Lok Sabha elections 2014 reach in its final stretch, out of 601 candidates, 119 have criminal backgrounds.

20 per cent candidates faces 'serious' criminal charges. Bihar is leading the race of tainted candidates, followed by Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal on third number.

In terms of political parties, CPI(M) leads the pack of criminal candidates followed by Samwajwadi Party (SP), JD (U) and BJP.

Out of 601 candidates in the phase 9 poll fray, 92 faces serious charges like murder, robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault cases.

11 candidates face murder charges. Congress- 12 out of 37, BJP-14 out of 39, AAP- 4 out of 25, BSP- 12 out of 40, Independents- 17 out of 153 are embroiled in criminal cases.

As per a report, in Bihar, Satish Dubey of BJP from Valmikinagar and Vijay Kumar Sahni of JD (U) from Vaishali have cases related to robbery and dacoity.

In last eight phases of elections, none of the phase was fought with no criminal candidate.

Most of the 'millionaire' candidates are reported to be in Lalu Prasad's RJD.

In Bihar, the richest candidate is Shamli Das, with assets worth Rs 2000 crore and the richest candidate is film maker, 61-year-old Prakash Jha with Rs 92 crore assets.
