West Bengal Health Department Investigates Supply of Low-Quality Catheters to Government Hospitals
The West Bengal health department is investigating the supply of allegedly substandard catheters to government hospitals. These catheters, reportedly locally made, were sold at high prices, raising concerns about patient safety. Officials noted that these central venous catheters (CVCs) were distributed to at least five medical institutions, despite the allocation of internationally compliant CVCs.

A senior official from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital mentioned discovering these inferior catheters in their stock. The official stated, "We started checking stocks some time back and found these locally made CVCs in my hospital store. These catheters are of low quality as compared to those allocated by the state. We have informed the state health department."
Distributor's Role and Pricing Concerns
The distributor, based in Hatibagan, Kolkata, has been supplying these catheters for three to four months. The local CVCs are priced around Rs 1,500 each, but the distributor charged Rs 4,177 per unit. This discrepancy has raised suspicions of insider involvement in the scam.
Prakash Surgical, the distribution company involved, admitted to supplying these low-quality catheters instead of those from a government-designated international company. An official from the company stated, "I was sick for a few months. Some employees of the organisation made this mistake. We are taking back all those units that have gone to the hospitals. It's all about misunderstanding."
Investigation and Potential Corruption
The health department has initiated a thorough investigation to determine who benefited from these supplies. All units will undergo testing to assess their quality. A complaint has also been lodged with the police regarding this issue.
An official from the health department highlighted that low-quality catheters were found in other hospitals' stores as well. This suggests possible corruption involving hospital staff and local officials from international organisations.
Central venous catheters are crucial medical devices used for administering fluids and treatments through veins. Known clinically as central line catheters, they must meet high standards to ensure patient safety during medical procedures.
The probe aims to uncover how many patients might have been affected by these substandard CVCs. The investigation will also explore any potential involvement of hospital equipment staff and local officials in this malpractice.
The health department remains committed to resolving this issue and ensuring that only high-quality medical supplies reach government hospitals.
