Lok Sabha Row: Opposition Considers No-Trust Move Against Speaker Om Birla

The opposition INDIA bloc is considering formal action against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress leader KC Venugopal said on Monday, indicating that a no-confidence motion is among the options being discussed. The move is being weighed amid allegations that opposition participation in recent Lok Sabha proceedings has been severely curtailed.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Venugopal accused the Speaker of limiting opposition interventions during House business. He claimed that even the Leader of the Opposition was not given adequate opportunity to speak, describing the position as that of a "shadow Prime Minister" whose voice, he said, was sidelined. Venugopal asserted that such a situation was unprecedented in India's parliamentary history.

The remarks come against the backdrop of growing opposition criticism over what they describe as tightly controlled debates on key issues, including the US-India trade deal. According to Venugopal, senior leaders of the INDIA alliance, under the leadership of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, are coordinating the opposition's response. Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav has also voiced a collective demand for corrective steps.

As deliberations continue, opposition leaders are framing any potential move against Speaker Om Birla as an effort to protect parliamentary conventions. They maintain that a no-confidence motion, if pursued, would aim to restore space for dissent and meaningful debate during Lok Sabha sessions.
