Lok Sabha Elections Phase 5 Turnout Nears 2019 Levels at 62.19%
The latest update from the Election Commission reveals a voter turnout of approximately 62.19 per cent in the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, marking a slight decrease from the 2019 elections by 1.97 percentage points. This phase of voting, which concluded on Monday evening, has extended the electoral process across 25 states and Union Territories, covering a total of 428 constituencies. With two more phases scheduled for May 25 and June 1, the electoral process is inching closer to completion.

Comparatively, during the same phase in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a higher voter turnout of 64.16 per cent was recorded across 51 seats in seven states. This year's fourth phase saw a turnout of 69.16 per cent, which was 3.65 percentage points higher than its 2019 counterpart. Meanwhile, the third phase of polling this year reported a turnout of 65.68 per cent, slightly lower than the 68.4 per cent recorded in 2019.
The second phase of the 2024 elections witnessed a voter turnout of 66.71 per cent, contrasting with the 69.64 per cent seen in the second phase of the previous polls. The initial phase for this election cycle saw a turnout of 66.14 per cent, which also fell short of the first phase in 2019 that had a turnout of 69.43 per cent.
The Election Commission has indicated that final turnout figures will only be determined after counting postal ballots and adding them to the total voting percentage. This process is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of voter participation in this pivotal electoral event.
As India progresses through its electoral phases, these figures highlight the dynamic nature of voter participation across different regions and phases. The slight decrease in voter turnout compared to the previous election raises questions about various factors that might have influenced voter engagement this year. With two more phases to go, it remains to be seen how these trends will evolve and what final voter participation rates will look like once all votes are tallied.
