Fifth Phase of Lok Sabha Elections Witnesses 60.09% Turnout

The latest data from the Election Commission (EC) reveals a voter turnout of 60.09% till 11.30 pm in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, marking a decrease of 4.07 percentage points compared to the same phase in the 2019 parliamentary polls. This preliminary figure, which does not include postal ballots, is subject to updates as more data arrives from field-level officers and polling parties.

60.09% Turnout in Lok Sabhas Fifth Phase

Urban apathy towards voting has persisted in cities like Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and Lucknow, mirroring trends observed in the 2019 elections. The EC has expressed concern over this ongoing issue, urging residents of these metropolitan areas to increase their participation in the democratic process. This call to action aims to address the low voter engagement historically recorded in these locales.

As of now, with the conclusion of the fifth phase, elections have covered 25 states and Union Territories, encompassing 428 constituencies. The electoral process is set to continue with two more phases scheduled for May 25 and June 1. Comparatively, during the fifth phase of the 2019 elections, which included 51 seats across seven states, a higher turnout of 64.16% was recorded.

The fourth phase of the current Lok Sabha elections saw a turnout of 69.16%, exceeding by 3.65 percentage points the turnout in the corresponding phase of the 2019 elections. Similarly, updated figures for the third phase show a turnout of 65.68%, slightly lower than the 68.4% recorded in the third phase of the 2019 polls. The second phase witnessed a turnout of 66.71%, against 69.64% in its 2019 counterpart, while the first phase saw a turnout of 66.14%, compared to 69.43% in the first phase of the previous elections.

The EC has stated that final turnout figures will only be determined after counting postal ballots and adding them to the total voting percentage. This meticulous process ensures that all votes are accounted for, reflecting the true participation rate among eligible voters.

This year's Lok Sabha elections have highlighted both ongoing challenges and shifts in voter engagement across India's diverse electoral landscape. As the nation progresses through its remaining electoral phases, attention remains focused on participation rates and their implications for democratic representation.
