Bangalore, Feb 17: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's two-day visit to Karnataka showed the party some ray of hope. Clearly, his presence was celebrated and the women were left impressed by the "women-empowerment" champion.

In fact, Congress party considers Mandya, Belgaum and Udupi-Chikmagalur as safe for the Congress party during the Lok Sabha elections and wants the Gandhi scion to fight a seat from here, apart from Amethi.

However, party sources are tight-lipped about such a move and said they would be "happy" if Rahul considered the proposal. However, both Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are tight-lipped about their decisions.

On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi took part in road shows in Tumkur, Bangalore Rural, Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar constituencies. His main aim was to promote women empowerment, targeting the 4% vote bank that they constitute. He was accompanied on the road show by actor and new comer Ramya, who won from Mandya with a huge margin. He also attended meetings in some other constituencies.

The central election committee, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, is expected to meet today to consider the list of candidates. (Read)
