Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 2: Election Day Measures To Beat The Heat In Bengaluru

Hundreds of voters are enduring the intense heat as they head out to cast their votes in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Bengaluru today.

According to the Koeppen-Geiger classification, Bengaluru falls under the Aw category, indicating a tropical savanna climate with dry winters, and an average temperature of approximately 22 degrees Celsius. The system categorises the globe into five distinct climate zones, primarily determined by factors such as temperature. This classification facilitates the understanding of various vegetation patterns and growth conditions across different regions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about heatwave conditions in five out of the 14 constituencies in the state that are holding elections today. Heatwaves are prolonged periods of scorching weather, which can have harmful effects on people, the environment, and the economy. Due to its tropical climate, India is particularly susceptible to these heat waves, which have been occurring more frequently and with greater intensity in recent years. Heatwaves are recognised once the maximum temperature hits 40 degrees Celsius or higher in the plain areas.

In Bengaluru, temperatures are anticipated to soar between 37 and 41 degrees Celsius across all 14 constituencies. Specifically, Mysuru, Mandya, Dakshina Kannada, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, and parts of Bengaluru are expected to experience scorching temperatures. Most polling booths witnessed long queues from 6:30 AM. Most of these queues were formed by morning walkers and senior citizens.

Officials from the Election Commission assured yesterday that necessary arrangements have been implemented to guarantee the safety and convenience of voters, particularly those who brave the scorching sun to participate in the electoral process.

To cope with the high temperatures, polling booths are equipped with various amenities, including fans, shade nets in waiting areas, RO potable water, and a supply of oral rehydration salts (ORS) for voters who may experience dehydration. Voters can conveniently check queue lengths using the Election Commission of India's 'Chunavana' app and plan their visit accordingly.

The Election Commission has also implemented measures to address potential medical emergencies. Each polling booth is stocked with first-aid kits and medical supplies to address conditions such as heatstroke. Additionally, Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are present to provide first-aid assistance. Ambulances are stationed nearby to promptly transport patients to nearby hospitals if needed.

Special provisions are made for people with disabilities and citizens aged 80 and above, who will receive free transportation to and from polling stations. These services can be arranged through the 'Saksham' mobile app until 5 PM today.

The Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases across the country until June 1, with the counting of votes and declaration of results scheduled for June 4.
