'Logical 1st step', India welcomes Pak’s decision to put Hafiz Saeed on terror list

The MEA has said that LeT chief Hafiz Saeed is responsible for terrorism in Pakistan's neighbourhood.

New Delhi, Feb 20: On Monday, India welcomed Pakistan's recent decision to put Hafiz Saeed, the co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawah, under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Issuing a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that LeT chief was responsible for terrorism in Pakistan's neighbourhood (India). The MEA said that putting him on terror list in Pakistan is the first logical step towards bringing Saeed to justice.

"Saeed is an international terrorist, the mastermind of Mumbai terrorist attack and responsible for unleashing wave of terrorism against Pakistan's neighbours through LeT/ JuD and their affiliates. Effective action mandated internationally against him and his terrorist organisations and colleagues is a logical first step in bringing them to justice, and in ridding our region of the twin menaces of terrorism and violent extremism," the MEA said in a statement.

Earlier, buckling under international pressure Pakistan had put Saeed on nation's terror list on Saturday. Saeed has been barred from moving freely in Pakistan and speaking to media. The restrictions have been put on Saeed by the provincial government of Punjab.

Pakistan had placed Saeed and his associates under preventive detention at his home on January 30.
