LG's Order for Tree Felling Undermines Delhi's Pollution-Free Efforts: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused Lt Governor V K Saxena of hindering the Delhi government's efforts to reduce pollution by permitting the felling of 1,100 trees in the Satbari ridge area without proper authorisation. The LG's office has not yet responded to these allegations.

Addressing a press conference, AAP chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar highlighted the measures taken by the party over the past decade to combat pollution in Delhi. She mentioned that one significant long-term initiative is tree planting. "In the last four years, two crore trees have been planted in Delhi," she said.

Efforts to Increase Green Cover

Kakkar emphasised that the Delhi government has increased the city's green cover to a historic high of about 24 per cent over the last ten years. She noted that 17 city forests currently exist in Delhi, with six more under development. These new forests are being created near metro stations in Shastri Park, ITO Chungi Part 2, Mukhmelpur, Shikarpur, Aya Nagar, and Jaunapur.

The AAP spokesperson alleged that the LG's actions are in violation of a Supreme Court order. "An order of the Supreme Court is required to cut even a single tree there. Without the order of the Supreme Court, cutting even a single tree in that eco-sensitive zone, in the ridge area of Satbari is not allowed," she stated.

Legal and Environmental Concerns

Kakkar accused Lt Governor Saxena of ordering tree felling despite these legal restrictions. She stressed that such actions undermine the efforts made by the Delhi government to enhance the city's green cover and control pollution. The AAP claims that these measures are essential for maintaining ecological balance and improving air quality.
