Delhi Power Consumption: Less Than 17 Lakh Have Zero Bills, Majority Pay Up to Rs 2000 Monthly

In Delhi, fewer than 17 lakh people receive zero electricity bills, while 70% of the 59 lakh domestic consumers pay monthly bills between Rs 500 and Rs 2000, according to official sources. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claims its government is the first in India to offer free 200 units of electricity per month and a 50% subsidy on up to 400 units.

Delhi Power Bills: Majority Pay Up to Rs 2000

The AAP has accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt Delhi's free electricity scheme by pressuring officials. In contrast, a BJP spokesperson accused the AAP of misleading Delhi residents about the power subsidy scheme and rising electricity bills. The BJP claims that only a small portion of people benefit from the subsidy, while most domestic consumers and all commercial users face high tariffs.

Electricity Consumption Data

Data from the power department indicates that over 70% of Delhi's residents pay electricity bills. Among these, about 40% pay more than Rs 2000 monthly, 14% pay between Rs 1000 and Rs 2000, and nearly 11% pay between Rs 500 and Rs 1000. In May, out of 59,36,466 consumers, 13,44,278 paid bills exceeding Rs 2000.

Approximately 28% of Delhi's domestic consumers do not pay for electricity consumption. The number of consumers with zero bills was 17 lakh in June but decreased to 16.67 lakh in July and slightly increased to 16.72 lakh in August.

Political Accusations and Promises

The AAP alleged that the BJP was unsettled after its efforts to hinder the party's initiatives for Delhiites failed. The AAP challenged the BJP to implement a similar free electricity scheme in any state it governs. Meanwhile, the BJP reiterated its promise to provide free electricity for the first 200 units if it gains power in Delhi in 2025.

The BJP also plans to offer lower electricity rates for commercial consumers if elected. The party maintains that a large percentage of domestic consumers are burdened with high tariffs under the current scheme.

The ongoing debate highlights differing political strategies regarding energy subsidies in Delhi. Both parties continue to assert their positions as they vie for public support ahead of future elections.
