Left Parties Seek Increased Representation in Maharashtra and Jharkhand Elections Amid INDIA Bloc Preparations
The INDIA bloc is gearing up for significant elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Left parties are aiming for a larger share of seats in these states. Currently, the CPIM and Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) each have one MLA in Maharashtra's assembly. This time, they are eyeing at least 12 seats, including Dahanu, Kalwan, Solapur City Central, Nashik West, Akole, Kinwat, Pathri, Majalgaon, Dindori, Igatpuri, Vikramgad, and Shahapur.

A CPIM leader expressed concerns about the limited seats allocated to Left parties within the opposition bloc. "Giving more seats to Left parties will strengthen the INDIA bloc. The Left organisations have been working on the ground, and it will augment Maha Vikas Aghadi's strength," said the leader who wished to remain anonymous. Despite their efforts in the Lok Sabha polls, they were not given any seat to contest as part of the alliance.
Left Parties Seek Greater Representation
On October 13, leaders from CPIM, CPI, PWP, Satyashodhak Communist Party (SCP), and Samajwadi Party convened in Mumbai to discuss upcoming elections. The Samajwadi Party is part of the INDIA bloc with two MLAs in Maharashtra. A state-level convention is scheduled in Nashik on Wednesday to further strategise for the polls.
In a statement regarding the Nashik Convention, Left parties reminded Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of their past success. In the 2024 elections in Maharashtra, MVA won 31 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats with broad anti-BJP-RSS support. However, they noted a narrow voting percentage gap between MVA and NDA—44% to 43.6%, respectively.
Strategic Alliances in Jharkhand
In Jharkhand, CPIM, CPI, and CPI ML Liberation are allied with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The INDIA bloc plans to contest elections together here. A recent merger between Marxist Co-ordination Committee (MCC) and CPIML Liberation has bolstered Left forces.
During the 2019 Assembly election in Jharkhand, JMM contested 43 seats and secured 30 victories. Congress contested 31 seats and won 16. RJD and CPIML each have one MLA. The NDA holds 30 seats in the 81-member assembly with BJP having 24 MLAs.
The Left parties have cautioned MVA to adopt inclusive strategies for Maharashtra's upcoming assembly elections to avoid outcomes similar to Haryana's past results.
