Left Front's Influence Wanes In Kerala, West Bengal And Tripura

The recent Lok Sabha elections have marked a downturn for the main Left Front parties- the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), particularly in their erstwhile strongholds of Kerala, West Bengal, and Tripura. While the Left Front managed to secure just one Lok Sabha seat in these states, its presence outside these regions saw a slightly better performance.

In Kerala, where the Left Democratic Front (LDF) holds sway, the CPI(M) managed to secure a victory in the Alathur parliamentary constituency. However, the victory was tempered by the loss of high-profile candidates such as former state finance minister Thomas Isaac and former state health minister K K Shailaja. Despite these setbacks, the Left parties commanded a significant 32% vote share, nearly double that of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s 16.7%, but falling short of the Congress's 35%.

Left Front s Influence Wanes In Kerala West Bengal And Tripura

Meanwhile, in West Bengal, where the Left Front once held power for almost 34 years before being ousted by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2011, the CPI(M) and its allies faced a dismal showing. Securing only around 5% of the votes across the state, the Left Front's presence was severely diminished. In the previous 2019 polls, the coalition's vote share stood at 6.33%. Despite fielding several student and youth leaders in an attempt to appeal to first-time voters, the strategy fell short, with the party often landing in third place in many of the state's 42 Lok Sabha seats.

The Left Front contested 30 of West Bengal's 42 seats this election, forming an alliance with the Congress, which contested the remaining 12 segments. However, the Congress was able to retain only one of the two seats it had won five years prior. Notably, in Murshidabad district, with Bengal's highest Muslim population at 62.28%, CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim was defeated by TMC's sitting MP Abu Taher.

In Tripura, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds power, the ruling party emerged victorious in two Lok Sabha seats, defeating the Left and Congress alliance. This marks the second victory for the saffron party in the state's Lok Sabha polls, following their triumph in 2019. Former chief minister and BJP candidate Biplab Kumar Deb secured victory over Congress candidate Ashish Kumar Saha in the West Tripura constituency, while in the East Tripura constituency, BJP candidate Kriti Devi Debbarman emerged victorious over CPIM candidate Rajendra Reang.

The outcomes of the recent elections paint a complex picture for the Left Front, signaling a decline in its traditional strongholds while facing challenges to its electoral viability in other regions.
