Learning From Wayanad Tragedy, 449 SQKM Area In Gujarat Declared Environmentally Sensitive

Following the cataclysmic landslide in Kerala's Wayanad, the Centre has released a draft to declare a total area of ​​56,825.70 square km of the 6 states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in the Western Ghats i.e. Sahyadri range as an ecologically sensitive area.

It includes 64 villages of three districts in Gujarat - Dang, Navsari, and Surat covering a total area of ​​449 sq km.

After the publication of the draft notification, no mining can be done in these areas and builders/contractors will not be permitted to extract sand. Besides these, thermal power plants, hazardous industries cannot be operated here, and an area of ​​more than 20 thousand square meters will be marked as no-construction zone.
