Latur, June 21: In a tragic incident, two conjoined twins lost battle for life on Monday, June 20, even before undergoing surgery. The babies were born in drought-hit Latur and were being brought to Mumbai for a life-saving surgery, but passed away mid-way around 8.30 pm near Pune.

Twin baby boys were born with a single heart and liver at Latur Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) via an hour-long caesarean operation on Saturday, June 18.

As their condition was critical and chances of survival were bleak, they were referred to Mumbai's Scion hospital for advanced paediatric surgery, media reports said.

The Siamese twins were born with separate hands, legs and head but chest and abdomen were fused together.

24-year-old Taslim Masumdar, the twins' mother, got to know that she had conceived twins after 20 weeks of pregnancy, when abortion could not be carried out.

Taslim hails from Sastur village of Osmanabad district of Maharashtra.
