Lashkar-e-Tayiba imposes strict Islamic dress code for women in Kashmir

Handwritten posters were plastered in various parts of the Valley in which the dress code was mentioned. It stated that women must wear loose robes which leave only the eyes exposed.

The posters particularly pointed towards the women in Shopian district. It said that the women there are going wayward and hence they need to observe the Islamic dress code. The outfit further states that even the hands must not be exposed.

The directive is very much along the lines of the one that was imposed in 2000 by the Dukhtaran-e-Millat. The group had attacked those women not following the dress code with acid.

The police in the Valley had not taken the new directive very seriously, but say that they would be on the lookout for mischief mongers. Some persons may take advantage of the situation and attack women, the police feel. There is heightened security in Shopian and other places following the surfacing of the posters.
