Landslide Disrupts Traffic Flow on Badrinath National Highway in Uttarakhand, Hundreds Stranded

Traffic on the Badrinath National Highway in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district has been severely affected by ongoing landslides. An official reported that the route between Gauchar and Karnaprayag is particularly disrupted. The district magistrate noted that approximately 250-300 vehicles are stranded in Karnaprayag, while around 200 vehicles are stuck in Gauchar.

Traffic Disruption on Badrinath Highway Due to Landslide

Efforts are underway to assist those affected by the traffic jam since Monday. The administration is providing food and accommodation for the stranded passengers. In Chattwapipal, local authorities have also made arrangements, and langars are being organised by the municipalities of Karnaprayag and Gauchar. Additionally, hotel and lodge facilities are being offered to travellers.

Alternative Routes and Traffic Management

Chamoli District Officer Sandeep Tiwari explained that due to the frequent highway closures, information about alternative routes is being shared with passengers. Travellers are being redirected from Karnaprayag to Gauchar via Khal-Sarmola on Pokhari Road. This measure aims to alleviate congestion caused by the landslides.

The landslides have been a recurring issue since Monday, particularly affecting Chattavapipal, where they have blocked the national highway repeatedly. As a result, there are long queues of vehicles on both sides of Gauchar and Karnaprayag.

Preventive Measures for Incoming Traffic

To manage the situation effectively, vehicles descending from Badrinath are being halted at Nandprayag, Chamoli, Pipalkoti, and Joshimath. Meanwhile, those heading towards Gauchar and beyond are stopped at Rudraprayag. These measures aim to prevent unnecessary inconvenience for passengers during this challenging time.

The administration continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that all necessary support is provided to those affected by the disruptions on the highway. The focus remains on maintaining safety and minimising discomfort for travellers in the region.
