Lal Singh Arrested: Former J&K Minister Held in Money Laundering Case
Former Jammu and Kashmir minister Lal Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday in a money laundering case. Singh was under investigation by the agency as part of the case lodged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against an educational trust run by his wife and former legislator Kanta Andotra.
In a significant development in Jammu, former Jammu and Kashmir minister Lal Singh was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday. This arrest came shortly after an anti-corruption court rejected his anticipatory bail application in connection to a money laundering case. The officials have informed that Singh had been under investigation by the federal agency as part of a case lodged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against an educational trust run by his wife and ex-legislator Kanta Andotra.

Choudhary Lal Singh, who is also chairman of the Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP), was apprehended from a house located in Chawadi area of Sainik Colony on the outskirts of Jammu city. An official disclosed that despite his efforts to dodge the agency and evade arrest, he was eventually nabbed. Upon hearing about Singh's detention, a group led by Andotra gathered outside ED office in Narwal attempting to gain entry but were stopped by CRPF personnel. A visibly upset Andotra pleaded for permission to meet her husband while law enforcement agencies rushed additional forces to maintain order at the scene.
Lal Singh’s Political Journey
Singh has held numerous political positions including two terms as MP and three terms as MLA. He switched allegiance from Congress to BJP in 2014 and served as minister in the previous PDP-BJP government which collapsed after BJP withdrew its support from alliance back in June 2018. Prior to this collapse, Singh resigned from BJP amidst controversy over his participation at a rally supporting accused individuals involved in Kathua rape and murder case dating January 2018 involving an eight-year-old girl.
Court Proceedings & Future Investigations
Earlier on Tuesday, as Singh's bail plea was turned down by the anti-corruption court in Jammu, relief came for his wife and daughter Kranti Singh whose interim anticipatory bail was extended till November 30 with a directive to cooperate fully with the investigation agency. After hearing arguments from both sides, Special judge Bala Jyoti passed three separate orders. The family had filed separate applications seeking pre-arrest bail for alleged offences under PMLA.
The Money Laundering Case
Last month, ED had conducted searches in various locations including Jammu and adjoining areas as part of its probe against Andotra’s educational trust and a former government official regarding irregularities in land purchase to establish the trust. This money laundering case originated from an October 2021 charge sheet filed by CBI which pointed out criminal connivance during issuance of land between January 4 and January 7, 2011 without adherence to ceiling limit imposed under Section 14 of the Jammu and Kashmir Agrarian Reforms Act, thereby giving undue pecuniary advantage to trust.
In conclusion, this arrest marks yet another high-profile case being pursued by India's federal agencies against political figures. The allegations levelled against Lal Singh are grave and serious in nature that warrant further investigations. As per court directives, the accused will remain under custody while his wife Kanta Andotra and their daughter Kranti Singh have been granted interim anticipatory bails until November end but have been directed to fully cooperate with ongoing investigations.
