Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta Resigned In Just Six Months After Swearing In: Sources

In a significant political development, Kavinder Gupta has resigned from his post as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, less than a year after taking office. The resignation comes just about nine months after he assumed the role in July 2025.

The development coincides with another major change in the country's constitutional offices, as C. V. Ananda Bose has also stepped down as the Governor of West Bengal, weeks before the state heads into Assembly elections.

Kavinder Gupta Steps Down as Ladakh Lieutenant Governor

Kavinder Gupta had taken oath as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on July 18, 2025. His resignation has now brought an early end to his tenure, which lasted less than a year in the strategically important Union Territory.

Ladakh, which became a separate Union Territory in 2019 after the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, is administered directly by the Central government through the office of the Lieutenant Governor.

While the reasons behind Gupta's resignation have not been publicly detailed, the move has drawn attention due to the short duration of his tenure.

CV Ananda Bose Resigns as West Bengal Governor

In a parallel development, West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose has also resigned from his position before completing his full term.

Bose submitted his resignation to Droupadi Murmu while he was in Delhi. His term was originally scheduled to continue until November 2027, but he chose to step down nearly 20 months earlier than expected.

Bose had been serving as the Governor of West Bengal since November 23, 2022.

Following his resignation, R. N. Ravi has been given additional charge of the state.
Speaking to PTI, Bose said he felt he had already spent sufficient time serving in the Governor's office, though he did not elaborate on the exact reasons for leaving the post.

Mamata Banerjee Reacts to Bose's Resignation

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over Bose's resignation and suggested that the Governor might have been under pressure.

In a post on social media platform X, she wrote:

"I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal. The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections."

Mamata Questions Appointment of New Governor

The Chief Minister also criticised the process through which the new Governor was appointed.

According to Banerjee, Amit Shah informed her that R. N. Ravi would take over as the Governor of West Bengal. She alleged that the state government was not consulted before the decision was made.

She said:

"Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure."

Banerjee further added that the Centre should respect the principles of cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions.

"The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States."

Political Developments Ahead of Elections

The resignation of CV Ananda Bose comes just weeks before West Bengal's 2026 Assembly elections, making the timing politically significant.

Meanwhile, Kavinder Gupta's sudden exit as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh has also raised questions about administrative changes at the Union Territory level.
