Kuwaiti Boat Reaches Mumbai Undetected, Sparks Security Review

Seven months after a Kuwaiti boat was seized in Mumbai, it was returned to its owner on Thursday following legal procedures, officials stated. The incident, which raised security concerns, occurred on February 6 when three men from Tamil Nadu arrived undetected in Mumbai.

Boat Incident Spurs Security Check

Maritime Security Concerns

The boat's arrival from Kuwait without detection highlighted gaps in maritime security. This is significant given the overhaul of security measures after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The vessel was found near Sassoon Dock in south Mumbai, and the three men on board were arrested for illegal entry into India.

Police seized the boat as part of their investigation. The men had navigated their way to Mumbai using a GPS device, completing a journey that took over ten days. They reportedly fled Kuwait due to torture and exploitation by their employer.

Legal Formalities Completed

On Thursday, the boat was handed back to its owner, Abdullah Sharahit. Sharahit came to Mumbai with two lawyers and completed the necessary legal formalities at Colaba Police Station before taking custody of the vessel.

The incident had sparked serious concerns about maritime security post-26/11 terror attack on Mumbai. The trio reached the metropolis by navigating the route with the help of a GPS device.

According to media reports from that time, the trio fled the Gulf country as they faced torture and exploitation by their employer.
