Kozhikode Celebrates UNESCO 'City of Literature' Title in India

Kozhikode, a city in north Kerala celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, has been officially declared as India's first UNESCO City of Literature. This announcement was made during an official event on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for the city known for its vibrant art scene and literary contributions. In October 2023, Kozhikode secured its place in the Literature category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), distinguishing itself among cities worldwide for its dedication to cultural and creative excellence.

Kozhikode: UNESCO Literature City

State Local Self Government Department (LSGD) Minister, M.B. Rajesh, highlighted Kozhikode's unique qualities at the event, describing it as a city with "a soul, characterized by humanity, harmony, a strong sense of justice, and freedom of expression." These values have significantly contributed to the city's artistic and literary achievements. The minister also credited the efficient functioning of the Kozhikode city corporation for its success in achieving the UNESCO title, notably surpassing other culturally rich cities like Kolkata.

Furthermore, the state government has declared June 23 as the City of Literature Day for Kozhikode, in honor of literary icons such as S.K. Pottakkad and Vaikom Muhammed Basheer. The day will be celebrated with special awards in six categories to recognize literary excellence. Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas unveiled the UNESCO City of Literature logo during the event, marking a new chapter in Kozhikode's cultural journey.

Kozhikode's historical significance as a trading port and its role in Kerala's freedom movement add to its rich cultural tapestry. The city is home to over 500 libraries and has been a hub for literary activities, including book festivals that attract writers and readers from across the region. Renowned Malayalam writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, a Jnanpith awardee, has been closely associated with Kozhikode, further cementing its status as a literary landmark.

The inclusion of Kozhikode in the UCCN alongside Gwalior, which was recognized in the Music category, underscores India's diverse cultural landscape. The UCCN now boasts 350 cities from over a hundred countries across seven creative fields. This network fosters international collaboration and innovation in urban development through culture and creativity.

As newly designated Creative Cities, Kozhikode and Gwalior are invited to participate in the 2024 UCCN Annual Conference from July 1-5 in Braga, Portugal. The conference theme, "Bringing Youth to the Table for the Next Decade," aligns with UNESCO's commitment to integrating culture and creativity into sustainable development strategies.

Kozhikode's recognition as a UNESCO City of Literature not only celebrates its historical and contemporary contributions to literature but also positions it on the global stage as a city committed to fostering creativity and cultural exchange. This accolade is a testament to the city's enduring legacy and its potential to inspire future generations of writers and artists.
