Kolkata Law Teacher Resigns Over Hijab Ban, College Claims Miscommunication

In a recent development from Kolkata, a controversy unfolded at LJD Law College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, when Sanjida Qadar, a faculty member, resigned over an alleged request by the college authorities to stop wearing her hijab at work. The incident, which took place on June 5, quickly garnered attention and led to widespread discussions on religious freedom and workplace policies. However, the situation took a turn as the college clarified that the issue stemmed from a misunderstanding, leading to Qadar's decision to withdraw her resignation and return to her duties on June 11.

Hijab Ban Sparks Teachers Resignation

Sanjida Qadar, who has been part of the LJD Law College faculty for three years, expressed her distress over the initial communication from the college's governing body. According to her, the directive not to wear a hijab after May 31 conflicted with her personal values and religious beliefs. Qadar had been wearing the headscarf to work since March-April without any prior objections. The matter escalated over the past week, culminating in her resignation.

The college authorities later reached out to Qadar, emphasizing that there had been a miscommunication. They assured her that there was no prohibition against wearing head coverings such as hijabs, dupattas, or scarves during work hours. This clarification was conveyed through an email, which also referenced the institution's dress code for faculty members. This code is reviewed periodically and allows for such head coverings while teaching.

Gopal Das, the chairman of the college governing body, addressed the controversy by stating that there was no explicit directive or prohibition regarding religious attire. He affirmed the college's respect for the religious sentiments of all stakeholders and highlighted that prolonged discussions with Qadar had taken place to resolve the misunderstanding. Das confirmed that Qadar would be resuming her teaching responsibilities from Tuesday, marking an end to the brief period of uncertainty.

This incident underscores the importance of clear communication within educational institutions regarding dress codes and religious expressions. It also highlights how misunderstandings can lead to significant disruptions but can be resolved through dialogue and reassurances of mutual respect for individual rights and beliefs.
