Kolkata Rape-Murder Victim's Father Breaks Down In Court: 'You Have Honoured...'

The father of the victim in the Kolkata rape and murder case broke down in court today as Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, was found guilty of the crime, over five months after the incident shook the nation.

Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was convicted under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, addressing punishments for causing death and murder.

The semi-naked body of the 31-year-old doctor, who was on duty, was discovered on the third floor of the seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August last year. Roy was arrested the following day.

When Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court, delivered the verdict, the victim's father said to him, "You have honoured the faith I had in you."

The sentencing is scheduled for Monday.

During the hearing, Roy claimed he was being "framed."

"I haven't done this. Why are those who did it being allowed to go?" the 33-year-old stated. The judge responded that he would have the opportunity to speak on Monday.

Sanjay Roy, who is currently held at Kolkata's Presidency Jail, has consistently denied the allegations, asserting that he is innocent and being falsely accused.

While investigators maintain that Roy acted alone, the victim's family has alleged that others were involved in the crime. They have also filed an application with the court requesting further investigation into the case.

Kolkata Police, who initially handled the investigation, arrested Roy on 10 August. The case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court.

The in-camera trial of Roy began on 12 November and concluded on 9 January, during which 50 witnesses were examined.
