Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Why Are Four RG Kar Hospital Employees Facing Polygraph Tests?

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) requested permission to administer a polygraph test on former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and four other doctors involved in the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the medical facility. Ghosh and the four doctors, who were on duty during the incident on August 9, were brought before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court at Sealdah in north Kolkata to seek approval for the lie detection tests.

The victim's body, bearing severe injuries, was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital's chest department on the morning of August 9, triggering nationwide protests.

The four individuals slated for the polygraph test include two first-year postgraduate trainee doctors, Arka and Soumitra; house staff member Ghulam; and intern Subhdeep. The CBI has identified discrepancies in their statements, prompting the need for a polygraph examination.

Reasons for the Polygraph Test:

  • Fingerprints of two doctors were found in the seminar room.
  • CCTV footage shows house staff Ghulam moving from the emergency area on the first floor to the third floor.
  • Intern Subhdeep was seen on the third floor and had interacted with the victim.

The CBI has obtained additional medical reports and aims to verify the statements of these individuals. Although there is no indication that these individuals are directly involved, the polygraph tests are intended to clarify inconsistencies.

Timeline of Events on August 9:

  • The victim and first-year students Arka and Soumitra dined together around midnight.
  • They then went to the seminar room, where they stayed until approximately 1:30-2:00 am, watching Neeraj Chopra's javelin final.
  • The seminar room is located near a sleep room where doctors rest.
  • Afterward, Arka and Soumitra went to the sleep room, while the victim rested in the seminar room.
  • Ghulam reportedly went to the third floor at 2:45 am, while Subhdeep stated he was in the intern room.
  • The seminar hall, sleep room, and intern room are all located close to each other on the third floor.

Former principal Sandip Ghosh continued his questioning at the CBI office for the eighth consecutive day on Friday. To date, Ghosh has undergone 88 hours of interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.
