Kolkata Doctors Rally for Justice Near Durga Puja Carnival Amid Ongoing Hunger Strike

On Tuesday evening, junior doctors staged a protest march from Rani Rashmoni Road in Esplanade, following the Calcutta High Court's decision to lift prohibitory orders near the West Bengal government's 'Durga Puja Carnival'. The Droher Carnival, organised by the Joint Platform of Doctors, attracted people from various backgrounds who supported the doctors' call for justice for the RG Kar hospital victim.

Doctors Protest Near Durga Puja Carnival

Debasish Halder, one of the protesting doctors, expressed frustration with the state government's response. "The CM seems unconcerned that young doctors are on a fast-unto-death," he stated. The medics have been on a hunger strike since October 5. Protesters chanted slogans and carried posters to highlight their demands.

Support from Celebrities and Public

Notable actor and director Aparna Sen joined the rally to show solidarity with the protesting doctors. "I am with them. I have come here to show my support... This is the place where I belong and not the government’s Puja Carnival," Sen remarked. Her presence underscored the widespread support for the doctors' cause.

During this time, over 85 award-winning Durga Puja committees showcased their goddess idols on decorated tableaux. These moved in a procession on Red Road, attended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and several envoys. The event highlighted cultural celebrations amidst ongoing protests.

Tensions at Dorina Crossing

At Dorina Crossing, tensions rose as protesters attempted to form a human chain. They had a brief confrontation with DC Central Indira Mukhopadhyay and other senior police officers who arrived at the scene. The situation highlighted the determination of both sides amidst ongoing demonstrations.

Meanwhile, two more junior doctors, Sapdan Chowdhury and Rumelika Kumar, joined their colleagues in the 'fast-unto-death' protest over the RG Kar incident. Sourav Dutta, another fasting medic, was admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital due to deteriorating health conditions, according to an official.

The ongoing protests reflect public discontent with the government's handling of the situation. As junior doctors continue their hunger strike, support from various sections of society grows stronger. The events underscore a significant clash between cultural festivities and pressing social issues in West Bengal.
