Kerala, Tamil Nadu On High Alert: Authorities Issue Safety Advisory For 'Kallakkadal Phenomenon'
The coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been alerted about the "kallakkadal phenomenon," anticipated to occur on January 15, 2025. This event involves unexpected sea swells, leading to turbulent waves that could endanger coastal communities. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued this warning, highlighting potential dangers.
Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious as waves might rise between 0.5 to 1.0 meters until 11:30 pm on January 15. The Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged people in high-risk zones to relocate to safer places, following guidance from local authorities.

Safety Measures for Coastal Residents
People living near the coast should refrain from venturing into the sea using small boats or country vessels. Fishing boats must be securely anchored in harbors to prevent damage from rough seas. Additionally, tourism activities on beaches should be avoided until the warning is lifted.
The KSDMA has emphasized the need for extra caution due to the risk of coastal erosion, which could worsen with the sudden rise in sea levels. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to safety guidelines during this period.
Understanding the Kallakkadal Phenomenon
The term "kallakkadal" means "sea that comes suddenly like a thief." It describes abrupt increases in wave heights, potentially reaching up to 1 meter. INCOIS has warned that these conditions may persist until late evening on January 15, urging residents to remain vigilant.
This phenomenon serves as a reminder of the sea's unpredictable nature. Both locals and visitors in Kerala and Tamil Nadu should heed these warnings seriously. By staying informed and prepared, they can reduce risks associated with sudden ocean changes.
