Kerala has achieved a remarkable milestone in domestic tourism, setting a new record with 2.18 crore tourist footfalls in 2023. This represents an impressive 15.92 per cent increase compared to the previous year, showcasing the state's growing popularity as a tourist destination. In 2022, Kerala welcomed 1,88,67,414 domestic tourists, and the latest figures indicate a sustained growth trajectory.

Domestic Tourist Arrivals Surpass Pre-Pandemic Levels
Significantly, domestic tourist arrivals in Kerala have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, recording an impressive 18.97 per cent increase compared to 2019. This remarkable growth highlights the state's effective strategies in attracting domestic tourists and its resilience in the face of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ernakulam Leads in Domestic Tourist Influx
Among Kerala's districts, Ernakulam emerged as the most popular destination for domestic tourists in 2023, welcoming a staggering 44,87,930 visitors. This district is renowned for its vibrant city life, scenic backwaters, and cultural attractions. Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Wayanad followed closely, each attracting a significant number of domestic tourists.
International Tourist Arrivals Show Promising Growth
Kerala also witnessed a substantial increase in international tourist arrivals in 2023, with 6,49,057 visitors compared to 3,45,549 in 2022. This remarkable growth of 87.83 per cent demonstrates the state's appeal to international travelers and its potential for further growth in this segment.
Ernakulam Tops International Tourist Arrivals
Ernakulam once again emerged as the most popular destination for international tourists, attracting 2,79,904 visitors. Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Kottayam also saw a significant influx of international tourists, contributing to the overall growth in this sector.
Challenges and Opportunities in International Tourism
Despite the impressive growth in international tourist arrivals, Kerala's Tourism Minister, P A Mohamed Riyas, acknowledged that the state still faces challenges in reaching pre-pandemic levels. The minister highlighted the impact of global conflicts and the lingering effects of the pandemic on international tourism. However, he expressed optimism that adventure tourism events planned for 2023 and targeted strategies to attract tourists to the Malabar region will help regain lost ground and further boost international tourist footfalls.
Kerala's tourism industry is thriving, with both domestic and international tourist arrivals reaching new heights in 2023. The state's strategic initiatives, effective promotional strategies, and diverse attractions have positioned it as a leading tourist destination in India. As Kerala continues to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities, it can look forward to even greater success in the years to come.
