Kerala Schools To Replace Grading System With Emojis, Stars
Several CBSE-affiliated schools in Kochi have adopted a novel approach to student evaluation. Traditional marks and grades are being replaced with emojis and stars. This change aligns with the NEP 2020 and CBSE guidelines, aiming to modernise the assessment process.
From this academic year, students from Kindergarten to class 2 will receive holistic report cards. These reports focus on evaluating children based on activities rather than traditional written exams. The new system prioritises skill development in communication, active learning, and overall health and well-being.

Focus on Skill Development
The emphasis is on nurturing skills such as communication and active learning. Students will be assessed through project work, inquiry-based tasks, quizzes, and group activities. These methods aim to test cognitive, emotional, social abilities, and physical coordination.
In addition to teacher evaluations, students are encouraged to self-assess. Feedback is also gathered from peers and parents. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded understanding of each student's capabilities.
Holistic Report Cards
The introduction of holistic report cards marks a significant shift in educational assessment for young learners. By focusing on activities rather than exams, schools aim to foster an environment that supports diverse learning styles and abilities.
This innovative evaluation method reflects a broader trend towards personalised education. It recognises the importance of developing various skills beyond academic knowledge alone.
This new system represents a progressive step in education reform. By embracing modern evaluation techniques, schools hope to better prepare students for future challenges while promoting a more inclusive learning experience.
