Kerala Journalists Seek Protection After Violent Protests

Violent Clashes
An agitation organized by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), alleging police atrocities against its workers during a protest against the Nava Kerala Sadas outreach program of the Left government, turned violent as police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Simultaneously, the BJP's Yuva Morcha held protests at multiple locations against the Nava Kerala Sadas program, leading to clashes with the police.
Journalists Injured
In a statement, KUWJ expressed concern over the safety of journalists and their equipment while covering protests. The union highlighted specific incidents where media personnel were injured or had their equipment damaged.
During the Congress workers' march to the DGP office, New Indian Express photographer Vincent Pullicakl and Jinu S Raj of 24News were injured due to stone pelting. Vincent sustained three stitches on his head, while Jinu suffered injuries to his ear. Additionally, the camera belonging to 24News channel was damaged during the Yuva Morcha protest.
Furthermore, Jaihind TV cameraman Riyas was injured when Kerala Police used a water cannon to disperse protesters. The cameras of Deepika and Kerala Kaumudi dailies were also damaged during the protests.
KUWJ's Appeal
In light of these incidents, KUWJ has urged the authorities to ensure the safety of journalists and their equipment while they carry out their professional duties. The union has emphasized the importance of press freedom and the need for journalists to be able to report on protests without fear of violence or intimidation.
