He was picked up by the immigration officials at Hyderabad while he was en route to Qatar from Melbourne. He was detained on the basis of a lookout circular issued by the Kerala police.

In October 2016, the Kochi city police had registered a case against Peace International School after it found offensive content in the textbooks meant for Class III students.

It may be recalled that Peace Education foundation has been under the radar of the agencies after several youth from Kerala went missing and allegedly joined the Islamic State in June 2016. One of the persons who went missing was Abdul Rasheed who was a trainer at the school. Rasheed's wives, Aysha and Yasmin also worked at the school. Yasmin had been arrested at Delhi while she was travelling to Kabul to join the ISIS.

Akbar had left India after the police arrested a representative of the publishing house.
